About GEMS

GEMS was founded by Jim Earley in 2003 and originally ran from his home in Devon on a mobile basis, servicing the farms and homes on Dartmoor and the local area which were off the national grid. The company soon moved to premises on Teignmouth Quay and since then has grown rapidly and expanded to also encompass marine power generation. The workshop has an excellent location with easy access to Dartmoor, Bodmin, and Exeter via the A38/A380/A30.

Due to the construction of the quay and tidal conditions in Teignmouth it is possible for us to dry vessels alongside the quay wall for work under the waterline (transmission, rudders, propellers, etc.) We offer a World wide service and maintain/repair systems overseas. We also carry out regular and emergency repairs to coasters visiting Teignmouth's busy commercial port.

Our years of experience have enabled us to build up an ever increasing portfolio of ongoing customers.

We specialise in fault finding and good quality repair work. We have a wide range of AVRs available to suit most of the worlds leading alternator brands. We can design and create custom built controls for all types of generators from demand start systems to fully synchronising and paralleling generators. Outback inverter specialists - supply installation and repairs of the most rugged inverter in the market place today. Old Lister and Petter engines are a speciality. We have worked on old Lister Generators and associated control panels for over 35 years and have an in-depth knowledge of every bit of this equipment.

We convert generator control equipment from older systems where the original equipment is not economically repairable. We are experienced with Woodward and GAC speed control equipment. We service and overhaul all types of sea water pumps. We also carry out commissioning work worldwide for a range of generator and marine engine manufacturers to both customer and manufacturer specifications and ensure equipment is fitted and set to give both reliability and longevity.

As an independent engineering company we are able to spec and supply equipment best suited to the application demands, and provide excellent in-depth technical backup and service for customers future requirements.

Where possible, our engineers are happy to provide technical help, to customers or other engineers alike. Many faults have been diagnosed and repaired by our very experienced engineers talking through a fix whilst on the phone or by emails. Of course, we are happy to do the repairs for you if this is not possible. We are a small team of engineers  but we can react quickly and happy to assist with any issue you need help with.  

Since 2003, GEM Services has been working with clients on a variety of innovative engineering projects.
